The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
