Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
