Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
