Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
